Akwa United head coach, Ayodeji Ayeni, has expressed disappointment in his side’s failure to qualify for the Nigeria Premier Football League Super Six playoffs.

The Promise Keepers lost out from the playoff spot to Enyimba despite recording an away victory against Gombe United on the final day of the season.

The Uyo club lost out to the eight-time champions on goal difference having finished on the same point.

Ayeni said it was tough for his players to miss out of the competition despite their spirited effort.

“I’m disappointed that we are unable to make it to the Super-Six playoffs,” he told the club’s media.

“From the beginning of the season, our target was to finish among the top three teams in Group A so we could challenge for the league title. It’s not what we wished for but that is football for you.”

Akwa United finished fourth on the Group B table with 32 points.
