The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has expressed optimism that more governors from opposition parties will soon defect to the ruling party.
Ganduje made this assertion on Monday, April 28, during a ceremony in Asaba, Delta State, to officially welcome Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa into the APC.
DAILY POST recalls that both Oborevwori and Okowa recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, ending the PDP’s dominance in Delta State after nearly 26 years.
Their defection also transferred the political structure of the state to the ruling party.
Speaking at the event, Ganduje praised the support from other APC governors, highlighting that with Oborevwori’s defection, the APC now has 22 sitting governors.
“I must thank our 21 executive governors. Now, with this, we have the 22nd governor. Let me tell you, keep your ears and eyes open — more governors will soon join us,” Ganduje stated while handing over the APC flag to Oborevwori.
Meanwhile, former Governor Okowa shed light on the reasons behind their move, saying the decision was driven by the need to better connect Delta State to the federal government in Abuja.
“When the news broke that we had decided to switch paths, many wondered why. But in every people’s history, there comes a time to make a strategic move for the common good. It wasn’t about me or the governor, but about ensuring Delta State has stronger access to the resources and goodwill available at the federal level,” Okowa explained.
Describing the defection as both “patriotic and strategic,” Okowa lamented that Delta State lost many opportunities during his tenure because it was in opposition to the federal government.
The event was attended by several APC leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who traveled to Asaba for the occasion.
