Donald Trump has said all he needs to do is make one phone call and he “could” have Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned to the United States.
Trump stated this while speaking with ABC News.
His comments come even though the administration has argued in court that the government cannot get him back.
“If he were the gentleman that you say he is, I would do that. But he is not,” Trump told ABC News’ Terry Moran on Tuesday.
Trump had been asked if he could call Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and request for Abrego Garcia’s return.
His administration had claimed Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang in a bid to justify his deportation.
It is a claim that Abrego Garcia’s lawyers deny.
“I’m not the one making this decision,” Trump added.
“We have lawyers that don’t want to do this.”
The Supreme Court has already ordered the US government to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return.
Abrego Garcia was deported to a prison in El Salvador on March 15.
