President Donald Trump on Thursday nominated Mike Waltz as the United States, US, ambassador to the United Nations, UN.
This is a shift from Waltz role as National Security Adviser to Trump.
However, Trump also said Marco Rubio will now serve as both secretary of State and NSA.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.
“In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department.”
This is the first staff shakeup since Trump became president in January.
Waltz’s job had been in limbo after it was made clear to him earlier this week that his time leading the NSC had come to an end.
Waltz had been on shaky ground—having lost most of his influence in the West Wing – after he inadvertently added a journalist to a messaging app group chat about highly sensitive military strikes.
