Disaster was averted in Zangon Kanya village, Ringim Local Government area of Jigawa State after a petrol tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) got involved in an accident.

A resident told DAILY POST that the incident happened on Thursday evening when the driver of the tanker lost control while trying to escape head on collision with another tanker in Zangon Kanya.

He said, as a result, the vehicle fell off the road.

Subsequently, the fuel started spilling on the road and some of the residents attempted to scoop the petrol, while others took to their heels.

He said a quick response by the security agencies helped in preventing residents from scooping the petrol, as they cordoned off the area.

Police Spokesman SP. Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the incident to DAILY POST.

He said, “the incident happened on Thursday May, 01, 2025. At about 1300hrs, a distress call was received that, there was a lone fatal motor vehicle accident involving a Howa trailer, Reg no. Kano 549 BNK, driven by one Muhammad Ali of Yankatsari village, Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.”

He explained that the tanker was reportedly loaded with sixty thousand (60,000) liters of premium motor spirit (PMS), coming from Lagos State, heading to Gujungu town in Taura LGA when incident happened.

According to him, on reaching Zangon Kanya village, Ringim LGA, the said driver, while trying to maneuver local traffic diversion on the road to avoid hitting an oncoming trailer vehicle, lost control of his vehicle, as a result of which, the vehicle fell off the road. Subsequently, the fuel started spilling on the road.”

SP. Shiisu said upon receipt of the report, police mobilized other security agencies, including the Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to the scene of the incident.

He said on reaching the scene, the whole area was cordoned to prevent villagers, passersby and other miscreants from scooping the spilling PMS.

The Police spokesman said the traffic is being well managed and controlled, as road users are diverted far away from the scene to avoid any untoward development.

He noted that so far no explosion or fire outbreak was recorded, adding that only the driver sustained injuries and was rushed to Ringim General Hospital for treatment.

It could be recorded that a similar incident happened in Majia town in Taura Local Government few kilometres to the scene where over 100 persons died and many injured.
