Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has confirmed that more than 60 bandits were killed during a recent attack on Mansur village in Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state.
The attack, which occurred two weeks ago, also claimed the lives of local vigilantes and civilians.
During a condolence visit to the community on Thursday, Governor Mohammed disclosed that 21 residents died in the assault — including 13 vigilantes and 10 civilians.
He described the incident as a grave security challenge but noted that the bandits also suffered heavy casualties due to the swift response of combined security forces.
“As they inflicted serious losses on us, over 60 of them also died in the fierce battle,” he said.
“Despite their superior firepower, our brave vigilantes and security agents stood their ground. This shows the courage of our people.”
Governor Mohammed extended his condolences on behalf of both the state and federal governments, stating that he is in close contact with the Office of the National Security Adviser to improve security and prevent future attacks.
“We are here to commiserate with the communities of Alkaleri, Gwana, Duguri, Yelwan Duguri, and parts of Bauchi Local Government. The federal government is aware, and support is on the way,” he assured residents.
The governor announced a financial relief package for affected families: ₦5 million each for families of the deceased vigilantes, ₦3 million each for families of the civilian victims and ₦20 million for logistics support to strengthen vigilante operations.
Governor Mohammed also revealed plans to recruit over 2,100 new vigilantes across the state by year-end, beginning with 300 to 500 personnel from the most affected areas.
The new recruits will be placed under a structured minimum wage system and trained by formal security agencies to ensure professionalism and accountability.
He also urged traditional leaders to help identify informants working with criminal elements.
Reaffirming his commitment to protecting the people, the governor declared:
“These people came to the wrong place. We are ready to sacrifice everything for our communities. If I must take off this ‘Babanriga’ and join you in the field, I will do it, In Sha Allah.”
