Rescue teams in Argentina continued efforts on Sunday to locate three people still missing after devastating floods swept through Buenos Aires and its surrounding province, claiming one life and displacing nearly 2,000 residents.
The torrential downpour, which began Saturday and persisted into early Sunday, overwhelmed infrastructure, cut off major roads, submerged farmlands, and caused rivers to overflow.
Fabian Garcia, Director of Civil Defence for Buenos Aires province, confirmed in a radio interview that one of the missing persons had been found dead.
“We still have three people unaccounted for,” he said, noting that search and rescue efforts remain ongoing.
At least 1,945 residents have taken shelter in emergency evacuation centres, while “a very large number” sought refuge with friends and family, according to Garcia.
Meteorologist Cindy Fernandez from the National Meteorological Service told reporters that the storm brought “five times the average rainfall for May,” creating unprecedented flooding conditions.
In response, both national and provincial governments have activated emergency protocols, deploying rescue teams and delivering essential supplies, including food, water, and blankets to the hardest-hit areas.
