Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has described as a the recent flood disaster in Mokwa as a national disaster due to its widespread impact on various tribes across the country residing in the area.
The governor spoke during a visit by the Management of Veritas University, who came to commiserate with the state government and flood victims in Minna..
Bago who spoke through his Deputy Yakubu Garba, noted that the devastating effects of the flood were felt beyond the state’s indigenous population, with many non-indigenes, including Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa communities among others, affected.
“When we say what happened in Mokwa is a national disaster, people don’t understand. The disaster threw the whole country into mourning.We have different tribes represented there.
“We have the Igbos, the Yorubas, the Hausas and many other tribes affected. In fact, those that were mostly affected were the non-indigenes. That is why we call it a national disaster because, it did not only affected the indigenes of Niger State,” he insisted.
The governor also expressed worries over recent killings in Benue State, citing reports of over 200 fatalities adding.
“What is happening there is very sad,” Bago observed.
He appreciated Veritas University for their prompt response and donation of relief materials, including mattresses, mosquito nets, water guards, and torchlights to support the flood victims.
“We appreciate you for this gesture. Nothing is too small. Out of all faith based groups in the country, you are the first to show Niger State and victims this gesture. The items will be given to the victims. We also urge you to continue to pray for God’s intervention for this country.”
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Rev. Dr Peter Bakwaph, Dean Faculty of Education, who spoke on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hyacinth Ichoku, said the visit was to show their solidarity and support.
He explained, “Veritas University with over 7,000 students cutting across various religions coexisting without any discrimination sincerely commiserate with the people of Niger over the flood disaster that claimed many, lives and destroyed property.”
