The Emir of Gwoza, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, has denied reports that Boko Haram terrorists invaded Gwoza town in Borno State.
He said the reports that caused panic were baseless and misleading.
The Emir’s reaction comes after widespread panic gripped the town on Friday following sounds of distant gunshots shortly after Jummat prayers.
The incident sparked fears of a fresh attack in the area, which borders the notorious Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains, both known hideouts for insurgents.
“Wallahi, I felt disappointed when I saw people running and chanting that Boko Haram has invaded Gwoza. There was no such attack,” the Emir said firmly while addressing journalists.
According to him, a joint preliminary investigation conducted with the Nigerian Army’s Brigade Commander in the area confirmed that there was no incursion or confrontation between Boko Haram fighters and troops in Gwoza town.
He acknowledged that the sounds may have originated from the outskirts, but stressed that they did not indicate an active threat to the community.
He, however, noted that unconfirmed reports suggested that four individuals dressed in black—suspected to be Boko Haram members, were seen sneaking into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.
However, he emphasized that the claims were yet to be verified.
He said, “Troops are conducting thorough search operations to ensure there is no infiltration. The curfew is to help security forces do their work and prevent unnecessary fear.”
