The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, has said that two bandits who carried out the deadly attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of the state were neutralised by security personnel stationed in the community.
He stated this on Thursday while updating journalists on the Yelewata attack and efforts to further protect lives and property in the state.
Ifeanyi revealed that one of the bandits who carried out the attack on Yelewata community was apprehended by his men and is “giving the police useful information.”
However, the identity of the arrested bandit was not disclosed by the police.
Over 200 people were reportedly killed in the Yelewata attack, according to local sources, but the CP, Ifeanyi, put the figure at 47.
According to CP Ifeanyi, the bandits wanted to overrun Yelewata but for the response of Police Tactical Teams and other security agents in the area.
He said Yelewata is now safe, and noted that the Inspector General of Police has deployed more personnel who have been sent to troubled areas and locations that are susceptible to attacks.
Ifeanyi gave the assurance of his command and sister security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that the Yelewata incident does not happen again.
