Pakistan has officially nominated US President, Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Pakistan cited Trump’s diplomatic role in helping to ease tensions between India and Pakistan during a violent flare-up earlier this year.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Pakistani government commended Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the escalation in May.
The violence, centered on the disputed Kashmir region, resulted in dozens of deaths and raised fears of a broader conflict.
According to Islamabad, Trump’s involvement was instrumental in securing a ceasefire between the two sides, which took effect on May 8 following several days of intense shelling and airstrikes.
“At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi,” the statement read.
Pakistan said the U.S.-brokered truce helped prevent a wider war, calling Trump’s role “a testament to his commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.”
However, Indian officials offered a different account of the ceasefire negotiations.
New Delhi said the agreement was the result of direct communication between the two countries and downplayed any external mediation.
