The acting Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, Dr. Theo Onyuku, has come under fire after a civil society group accused him of allegedly falsifying his age on three separate occasions to unlawfully prolong his stay in office.

The hospital’s labour unions alongside a group, Concerned Citizen Right (CSR), made the allegation at a news conference in Calabar on Sunday.

But the acting CMD has reacted, admitting knowledge of the allegations but saying he would not comment because the matter is being investigated.

He stated that the campaign against him was championed by his antagonists, who oppose his emergence as CMD.

“I want you to know that anyone in position of authority will always have oppositions,” he said.

According to the whistleblowers, the CMD who they said was due to have exited the service on June 6, 2025, had doctored other personnel records, making him to have three different dates of birth on his record.

They alleged that the act was a ploy to elongate his years of service in the hospital.

The group called for a presidential investigation into the allegation, adding that there is much rot and decay in the hospital.

Mr Patrick Umoh who addressed newsmen on the allegations said, “We call on President Bola Tinubu to set up an independent body to investigate the wanton corruption and falsification of service records at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar, Cross River.”

He noted that the crisis in the hospital has lingered for years and has affected the quality of service delivery by staff of the hospital.

He further disclosed that the alleged corruption and falsification of records have pitched management of the hospital against the labour unions.

According to him, the allegations are before the Ministry of Health but no action has been taken to address them.

“Rather, the Ministry of Health seems to have taken sides with the management.

“It is very shocking with all the information made available to the ministry, it has decided not to act.

“The staffers of the hospital are now being intimidated and harassed for voicing out and exposing these abnormality.

“This is the reason why the President needs to step in directly and order a full-scale investigation to be conducted by other persons other than those from the ministry,” Umoh insisted.

Elaborating on alleged intimidation of staff by the hospital management, he said, “On June 18, 2025, the CMD called for a staff meeting which was held at the conference hall. He addressed staff as infidels for daring to bring these allegations up for public attention.”
