The Bauchi State Police Command has issued a stern warning to the public, especially young people over the rising trend of climbing telecommunications masts, describing it as reckless and life-threatening.
According to the Spokesman of the Command, CSP Mohammed Wakil, at least three recent incidents have involved individuals attempting suicide by scaling network masts across Bauchi metropolis.
The first case occurred on June 16, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m., when 22-year-old Adamu Salisu, popularly known as “Sarkin Malaman Samarin Muda Lawal Market,” climbed a mast near Kofar Dumi Primary School.
He vowed not to come down until Alhaji Bala Wunti returned his call and declared his intention to contest for the Bauchi State governorship.
Two days later, on June 18, 2025, around 1:00 p.m., 35-year-old Usman Nanu from the Kofar Dumi area also climbed a mast at the same location., claiming he would not descend until Governor Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, CON, popularly known as Kauran Bauchi, confirmed his bid for the 2027 presidential election.
The most recent incident took place on June 29, 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., when 37-year-old Alkassim Saidu Yakubu from Unguwan Magaji, Inkil, ascended an MTN mast.
He insisted he would not come down until the Bauchi State Commissioner of Finance declared interest in the 2027 governorship race.
In all cases, Wakil said police operatives were swiftly dispatched to the scenes and successfully rescued the individuals, who have since been taken into custody for attempted suicide.
According to the statement, the suspects confessed to their actions and expressed regret, stating they were unaware of the full consequences of their behaviour. They are currently undergoing profiling and will face legal action.
