The Taraba State Commission of Inquiry into communal conflicts has formally commenced its activities with an inaugural meeting held on Wednesday at High Court No. 3 in the Taraba State High Court Complex, Jalingo.
The Commission, inaugurated by Governor Agbu Kefas, is tasked with the responsibility of investigating the root causes of communal crises in Karim Lamido local government council and other affected areas across the state.
The commission was also assigned the responsibility of proposing lasting solutions to foster peace in the affected communities.
Addressing the meeting, Chairman of the Commission, Justice Silas Haruna, described their assignment as a “national duty” that is vital to peace, justice, and development.
Haruna announced that the Commission has opened the submission of memoranda from the public and urged individuals, groups, and communities to submit grievances, testimonies, and suggestions on or before 17th July 2025.
“We call on all stakeholders, especially those from the affected communities, to take advantage of this opportunity to be heard. This Commission belongs to the people, and its strength lies in the openness, transparency, and inclusiveness of the process”, Justice Haruna said.
He disclosed that following the memorandum phase, a broader meeting will be convened with representatives of disputing communities, traditional leaders, security agencies, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to engage in dialogue and chart pathways for peace.
Justice Haruna emphasized that the Commission is a fact finding, and non partisan body committed to impartiality.
He assured the public that no individual or group would face intimidation or persecution during the inquiry.
“We are here to serve justice, not to take sides. The Governor has made it clear that this process must be handled with the utmost fairness and impartiality,” he stated.
He urged members of the Commission to maintain integrity and diligence in carrying out their responsibilities, expressing confidence that the Commission would fulfill its mandate effectively.
