Human rights activist, Ukan Kurugh, has called on the Commissioner of Police in Benue State to caution officers against unnecessary shooting that may cause panic in the state.
Ukan made the call in an open letter to the CP following a sporadic shooting by police officers in Ankpa Ward, Makurdi, the state capital on Wednesday.
It was gathered that some Police officers, who accompanied the remains of a colleague to the cemetery in Ankpa Ward engaged in a sporadic shooting, causing panic among residents of the area.
Ukan said residents, who heard the gunshots scampered for safety thinking that some Fulani herdsmen had launched another deadly attack in Makurdi.
He urged the CP to caution his men to ensure that future ceremonies are conducted with utmost regard for public safety and peace, especially considering the spate of insecurity currently in the state.
In the open letter, Akan said, “I write to respectfully draw your attention to the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday during the burial of one of your officers at Ankpa Ward, Makurdi. The indiscriminate shooting by police officers at the burial site triggered panic across the community, causing residents to flee in fear for their lives.
“While we understand the intention may have been to honour a fallen colleague, such actions are ill-advised especially in a state like Benue, where communities are already on edge due to ongoing attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
“The sound of gunfire, even ceremonial, is deeply unsettling for a people already living in fear and trauma.
“Had this incident been reported by social media users without context, your command would have likely issued warnings or summoned individuals for clarification. It is therefore only right that the same standard be applied to your personnel when their actions disturb public peace.
“We strongly advise that such conduct not be repeated. Officers of the law must set the standard for discipline, especially in these tense times. We urge you to call your men to order and ensure future ceremonies are conducted with utmost regard for public safety and peace”.
