The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Gombe State has revealed that no fewer than 72 people lost their lives in 171 road traffic crashes between January and June 2025.
The figures were disclosed by the Gombe Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix Kaura, during an interview with newsmen on Wednesday.
He noted that a total of 1,156 persons were involved in the various accidents recorded during the first half of the year.
According to Kaura, “641 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 443 went home unhurt.”
He further broke down the data, explaining that “6.23 per cent of the passengers involved in the crashes in the period under review died, 55.45 per cent sustained injuries, and 38.32 per cent went home without injuries.”
The Sector Commander disclosed that 234 vehicles were involved in the accidents, out of which 105 were either bicycles or tricycles, a category that made up 44.87 per cent of all vehicles affected.
The Monthly breakdown of the fatalities shows a grim pattern: 18 deaths were recorded in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, and another 16 in June.
Kaura blamed the alarming figures on persistent recklessness among road users, citing over-speeding, dangerous driving, route violations, and overloading as major contributors to the crashes.
He lamented the nonchalant attitude of some motorists who disregard safety regulations.
He warned that with the rainy season now fully underway, drivers must exercise extra caution.
“Now we are in the rainy season, drivers must be careful not to over speed because the roads are slippery and wet,” Kaura advised.
He also stated the importance of vehicle maintenance and safety checks before embarking on any journey.
“Ensure good visibility by fixing whatever impedes good visibility while driving; if possible drive less at night,” he added.
