The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan in preparation for emergency repair works on the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge.
The repairs are scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 6 May, and are expected to run through to Tuesday, 23 September 2025—a 110-day project divided into eight phases, targeting both carriageways of the bridge.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, it was revealed that phases 1 to 4 will address the inbound section of the bridge leading to the Third Mainland Bridge and will take place between 6 May and 14 July. The remaining phases 5 to 8 will focus on the outbound section, running from 15 July to 23 September.
Osiyemi explained that during the first phase, motorists travelling towards Oshodi or Victoria Island via Oworonshoki will be diverted approximately 50 metres before the construction zone and will rejoin their original route immediately after passing the affected stretch.
“Commuters approaching from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are advised to reroute through the Ojota Slip Road, continue onto Ikorodu Road, and access Anthony, where they can make a right turn by the Taxi Park to reach Oshodi,” he said.
“Other alternate routes include using Anthony via Town Planning Way to link Gbagada and proceed via Third Mainland Bridge, or travelling from Mowe and its environs through Ojota and Funsho Williams Avenue to connect Eko Bridge and proceed to Victoria Island.
“For those coming from Ikeja, a route through Maryland, Funsho Williams Avenue and onward to Outer Marina is advised. Drivers heading to Oshodi from Ikeja should use Ikorodu Road through Maryland, turn at Anthony by the ramp near the Taxi Park, and continue to Oshodi,” Osiyemi added.
According to him, once repair works shift to the outbound section of the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge on 15 July, motorists heading towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway via Oworonshoki will be diverted approximately 50 metres before the construction zone and reconnected to their original lane shortly after.
He advised commuters travelling from Victoria Island to destinations such as Alapere, Ketu, and Ikorodu to consider alternative routes by taking the Eko Bridge, continuing through Funsho Williams Avenue, and proceeding via Ikorodu Road.
For those heading to Mowe and nearby areas from Victoria Island, Osiyemi recommended using Eko Bridge through Funsho Williams Avenue and connecting via the Abiola Garden Ramp.
He further assured that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, would be deployed throughout the duration of the repairs to manage traffic and minimise disruptions for commuters.
Osiyemi appealed for public cooperation and patience, emphasising that the partial closure is essential to facilitate crucial maintenance work on the bridge’s expansion joints, being carried out by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
