The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area.

In a statement issued on Thursday via its official X handle, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, disclosed that it is collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution, vowing that justice will be pursued in a case that has ignited widespread public concern.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing incident of sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State, which has understandably garnered significant public attention,” DSVA stated.

The alleged perpetrator, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently being held at Ayobo Police Station.

DVSA confirmed that the case has been formally transferred to its Gender Desk Unit for thorough investigation.

“The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is actively involved in this case, and investigations are already underway in close collaboration with the Police Force. The case has been referred to the Gender Desk Unit, and the alleged perpetrator is currently in custody at the Ayobo Police Station,” the agency confirmed.

DSVA added that the government is actively engaging with the survivor’s family, offering comprehensive support that includes medical treatment and psychological care.

“The survivor has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit and Psychosocial Services to ensure she receives comprehensive and immediate psychosocial support. Medical attention has also been provided,” the agency added.

It also stated: “We deeply appreciate the vigilance of the public in bringing this matter to light, as community awareness plays a vital role in safeguarding our children.”

It further reiterated the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence, saying: “The Lagos State Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to securing justice for survivors of sexual violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held fully accountable under the law.”
