The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has said it has deployed mobile courts to roads as part of its strategy to stem the rising tide of road accidents in the country.
The Edo State Sector Command of the Corps stated this on Monday during the United Nations Safety Week in Benin City, Edo State.
The Sector Head of Operations, Ben Akunhe, who disclosed this, said the deployment was part of activities to commemorate the United Nations Global Road Safety Week and to instill sanity on the roads.
Akunhe stated that the UN Assembly came out with a resolution in 2010 that the world/nations should key into the programme so that the rising tide of road crashes could be cut down, especially as it affects fatalities and injuries recorded worldwide.
He said the Assembly came up with five pillars that the world must key into to be able to reduce the increasing rate of road crashes.
He listed the pillars to include road crash management, road safety administration, safer road users, safer vehicles, and post-crash events.
The Sector Head of Operations opined that the pillars are geared towards ensuring a safe motoring environment.
“We deployed mobile courts to the road to apprehend most of the drivers that are disobeying traffic rules and regulations, not adhering to the strict rules of driving, and driving against traffic, especially at Ramat Park and other areas.
“Erring drivers would be tried by the court, and those found guilty will be fined accordingly. That would serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.
Akunhe assured that the FRSC would work within its power to ensure that the rising tide of road crashes in Edo State and Nigeria, which continues unabated, is curbed.
He added that the Corps is of the opinion that anyone born in Nigeria has a right to life, not just the right to a life of amputees and handicaps.
