The Nasarawa State government has issued a warning that anyone caught bullying children or other vulnerable persons will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
Barr. Hauwa Jugbo, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, made this known to journalists during a briefing ahead of the 2025 National Children’s Day celebration on Thursday in Lafia.
The commissioner emphasised the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of every child by eliminating all forms of bullying.
She stated that the state has consistently prioritised the protection of children and other vulnerable groups, in accordance with UN resolutions and the domesticated Child Rights Law.
“Parents, teachers, adults, and other caregivers who are responsible for the welfare of children must refrain from bullying those in their care, as such actions attract sanctions,” she warned.
Jugbo expressed concern over the increasing reports of bullying, not only in schools but also within homes.
She noted that victims often endure long-term physical, emotional, and psychological trauma.
“What is most troubling is the sense of entitlement and lack of empathy displayed by some perpetrators, who believe they have the right to mistreat their victims.
“Unfortunately, many of these incidents are never reported to the authorities, which prevents the government from intervening and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“This troubling situation can lead to serious injuries, even death, or leave the victims with lasting anxiety that hinders their personality development and growth”.
She reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance policy on bullying and warned that anyone found guilty would face the full weight of the law.
“Bullying is a statutory offence, and legal action can be taken against perpetrators under existing laws,” she added.
The commissioner assured that the government would continue to prioritise the protection of vulnerable groups, ensuring they are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
