The Kano State Government has launched Operation Safe Corridor, a reintegration programme to rehabilitate and support repentant thugs across eight metropolitan local government areas of the state.
The initiative, unveiled at the Fele Events Centre in Kano, aims to offer a fresh start for young people previously involved in political violence, street fighting, and other forms of social unrest.
Speaking at the launch, the state Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the programme as a deliberate strategy by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to redirect the energies of the youth toward peacebuilding and personal development.
“This is the third day we are engaging with youths from eight metropolitan LGAs,” Waiya said.
“There is a purpose for creation, and the primary one is to serve God. In doing so, we are meant to reject evil and promote what is right.”
He stressed that the programme is built on strong moral and spiritual values. “Allah forbids killing and harming others. No politician should convince you to hurt another person. If they offer you drugs or weapons, they are not your friends—they are your enemies,” he warned.
Waiya further noted that the governor is committed to seeing the youth thrive in a secure, crime-free environment.
“The Governor of Kano is willing to support you, that’s why we’ve gathered you here. But we will not condone lawlessness. If anyone offers you money to cause violence, take the money if you must—but reject the act,” he told the gathering.
In a stern message to political actors, the commissioner warned against the manipulation of young people under the pretense of empowerment.
“We will not allow any politician to exploit our youth for selfish political gains. Thuggery is a stain on the image of Kano. It must stop,” he said.
The government says Operation Safe Corridor will be expanded with counseling, skills training, and monitoring systems to ensure genuine transformation among the participants.
