The leadership of the Umueri General Assembly (UGA) has petitioned the Anambra State Government, over alleged moves by some members of the community to cause a breach of peace.

According to the group, if not quickly called to order, the looming crisis may lead to a breach of peace, and, by extension, retard the development and progress of the community.

The petition followed the crisis rocking the UGA leadership as some individuals were moved to create factional leadership with the aim to sack the President General, Ambassador John Metchie.

In a letter signed by 50 community leaders made up of 10 UGA executive members and 40 others, dated Monday, July 10, 2023 and addressed to the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, the petitioners upheld Metchie as the authentic President General of the group.

The petition cited a purported document in which a few executive members of UGA, without following due process and failing to comply with the provisions of UGA constitution, paraded a document in which they claimed to have passed a vote of no confidence on Chief Metchie and his Deputy.

However, UGA executive members and other community leaders, via the petition, drew the attention of the state Government to the document, asking it to quickly intervene in the matter before the crisis would escalate.

According to them, the writers of the purported vote of no confidence were only consumed by envy over the rising profile of Chief Metchie.

The petitioners urged the state “government to take note of the troublemakers and their sponsors as well as warn them against breaching the development of the community”.
